Self-awareness is not a trait that is bought online and then wait 2-3 days for delivery to arrive. For some, it comes sooner than others. For most, self-awareness comes with time, experiences, and most importantly failures. Responding to those failures with course correction leads to a life in pursuit of refinement.
A wise man once said, “The core of understanding lies in the individual mind, and until that is touched everything is uncertain and superficial. Truth cannot be perceived until we come to fully understand our potential and ourselves. After all, knowledge in the martial arts ultimately means self-knowledge.” That wise man aforementioned is none other than Bruce Lee. This core refers to breaking away the lies of our life and running after clarity. The lies refer to your self-worth, value, meaning, and any other existential word you can put in there. Becoming “one with yourself” comes from tearing away the you that was never you to begin with. Lee developed a lifestyle of taking care of your body through Jeet Kune Do not as a way to gain status or meaning. Lee pushed this, without a name at first, to encourage others that learning about their body and who they are leads to a lot of peace.
One of the key words from Lee’s quote is superficial. So often we live life in a way that is disconnected from our purpose. We as people put on masks or cloaks that take the form of lies. So from Lee’s perspective, whether it be from martial arts or anything else, you are allowed to become who you were always meant to.
